The BJP on Tuesday claimed that the recent rise in political strength of ‘do ladke’, a reference to Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, has led to emboldening criminals in Uttar Pradesh.

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Samajwadi Party of harbouring criminals and attacked the Yadav-led party for the arrest of two people allegedly associated with him on charges of rape and attempt to rape.

Not only the SP has been giving “cover fire” to the criminals, but members of the opposition bloc INDIA are also helping each other to defend the criminal elements from their alliance partners, he told reporters.

“Those associated with the two boys have been committing crimes. The audacity of the criminals has been increasing ever since these two boys became stronger,” he said in an apparent reference to Congress leader Gandhi and Yadav, whose alliance outperformed the BJP-led NDA in Uttar Pradesh in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

“It is in the DNA of the Samajwadi Party to support criminals,” he said, in an attack on the regional party’s demand for DNA tests to prove the guilt of the accused in one of the cases.

The BJP leader also attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her stance that she will transfer the rape and murder case of a doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata to the CBI if the local police do not solve the case by Sunday.

Is so much time being given to manipulate the case? he asked, demanding immediate transfer of the investigation to the CBI.

Questioning the “silence” of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on these crimes, he said the INDIA bloc parties are covering up “mutual criminal elements” in their alliance.
