Woman doctor rape and murder: NHRC sends notice to state government, police chief | India News

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the West Bengal government and the state police chief in connection with a case of rape and murder of a doctor at a government-run medical college and hospital in Kolkata.

The Commission said on Tuesday that it had requested the reports from these authorities within two weeks.

The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that a young doctor was found dead in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, it said in a statement.

“The body of the deceased reportedly had scratch marks, indicating that there was some struggle at the time of the incident. The family has alleged that the victim was raped and murdered,” the rights group said.

The Commission has noted that the content of the media information, if true, raises a serious question of violation of the victim’s human rights.

Accordingly, it has sent notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of West Bengal seeking a detailed report within two weeks, he said.

The report is expected to include the current status of the police investigation and the measures taken against those responsible, as well as any compensation paid to the deceased’s next of kin, the statement said.

The Commission said it would also like to know what measures the authorities have taken or proposed to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The body of the graduate student was found on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the incident.
