Kritika Kamra says I don’t want to be an outcast in films or shows

Actress Kritika Kamra says she has been drawn to strong roles since her days on television because she has no interest in playing “shy” characters.

Known for her role as a reporter in “Bheed” and a student activist in the streaming show “Tandav,” Kamra began her acting career on the small screen with the hit show “Kitni Mohabbat Hai,” where she played an ambitious small-town singer.

“I don’t want to be a shy girl, that’s something I’m just not interested in. I think there’s a lot to do in the service of female characters. I’m not a creator, writer or director, but I can try to play a character that is memorable or is doing something more than being the love interest of the male lead or being the mother or the sister,” the actress told PTI in an interview.

Kamra, 35, said that while she has nothing against the usual daughter-in-law or daughter-in-law roles, she just wants these characters to be a little more rounded. She said she left television because those types of characters became increasingly difficult to find.

“When I was working in television, I was constantly drawn to these strong roles. At that time, kitchen politics was the focus of every story, but I didn’t do any of those shows. Later, supernatural dramas started coming up, but I didn’t do that, I didn’t become ‘Naagin’, I used to try to find an alternative, but after a point I hit a dead end in television.

“There’s nothing wrong with playing a daughter or daughter-in-law, but I can have an identity beyond that, so I chose to play a doctor or a reporter because at the time the character had a work life, you saw that character as a person,” she said.

Kamra, who is currently starring in ZEE5’s “Gyaarah Gyaarah,” a remake of the hit South Korean drama “Signal,” said it has become more stressful to be an artist in the age of social media, where one has to walk the fine line of maintaining exclusivity while also being visible on social media.

“Acting is an art and you want to constantly improve. It’s a work in progress and something I can work on. But the peripheral aspects are becoming more and more stressful because it seems like the goal keeps changing.

“We’re now in an age of hyper-information where the meaning of stardom or popularity or how you can get it has completely changed. It’s great because it’s become democratic thanks to Instagram, but the game has changed a bit for actors,” he said.

Sometimes, Kamra says, you’re told to be exclusive, and other times the advice is to do “things that are populist but unique.”

“Nobody has the formula and the industry is changing, career management is very stressful,” he added.

Kamra’s next project is Nagraj Manjule’s debut OTT series “Matka King” and she is very excited to work with the director, known for Marathi hits like “Fandry”, “Sairat” and the Hindi film “Jhund” with Amitabh Bachchan.

“Matka King” marks Manjule’s streaming debut.

“I never thought I would get to work with him (Manjule). Before ‘Jhund’, he was doing more Marathi films and I didn’t speak Marathi, so I didn’t think it would happen. But when I got this opportunity, I grabbed it because if he was doing something in Hindi, I wanted to be a part of it,” said the actor.
