Bangladesh crisis: Indian Coast Guard deploys aircraft and hovercraft to monitor maritime borders | India News

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) aircraft and hovercraft, along with other vessels, are carrying out surveillance operations along the maritime border with Bangladesh to prevent illegal influx into India amid escalating unrest and government collapse in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is in a politically unstable situation since Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister on August 5 amid growing protests. The protests, led mainly by students demanding an end to the quota system for government jobs, turned into anti-government demonstrations.

In response to rising tensions in the neighbouring country, the ICG has beefed up security along the international maritime boundary line to prevent any illegal intrusion into India.

ICG Deputy Director General Anupam Rai on Monday said security measures have been stepped up to deal with possible threats. “Following the political unrest in Bangladesh, the Indian Coast Guard has increased its patrols and surveillance along the International Maritime Boundary Line… To prevent any hostile act and unlawful intrusion, we have beefed up security and have stationed two to three boats… The areas of Sunderban Creek are being patrolled by our air-powered vessels and interceptor boats,” Rai told ANI.

He further explained that the Sunderban Creek areas are under close surveillance, with hovercraft and interceptor boats on constant patrol. The ICG coastal surveillance radars at Haldia, Paradeep and Gopalpur are operational 24×7, and continuously scanning the nearby Indian coasts for any signs of illegal activity.

“No illegal activity has been observed so far, but we have specifically directed our vessels to board all fishing boats or any vessel that is near the Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) or in the creek areas,” he added.
