The Court of Arbitration for Sport has further extended the decision on Vinesh Phogat’s silver medal appeal. The decision, which was scheduled for 21:30 IST on August 13, has been postponed to August 16. The decision will be taken at 21:30 IST on Friday.

Following the hearing on 9 August, it was reported that the verdict would be announced on the same day, but it was not announced. It was expected to be announced on 10 August, but was postponed until 13 August. Now, it has been postponed for three more days, from 13 to 16 August.

Indian wrestler Vinesh had filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport for a joint silver medal at the 2024 Olympics. Vinesh was disqualified from her gold medal match after she was found to be about 100 grams overweight in her 50kg wrestling category on the day of the final.

The 29-year-old wrestler from Haryana announced her retirement from the sport after being disqualified from the Games. “Wrestling won and I lost. Please forgive me, your dreams and my spirit, everything is shattered and I have no strength anymore. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be grateful to all of you. Please forgive me,” she wrote in a post on X on August 8, a day after she was disqualified from the final.

However, the wrestler appealed to the CAS for a silver medal. Vinesh Phogat’s hearing against United World Wrestling was held on August 9. The wrestler was represented by four lawyers. Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, along with French lawyers, handled Vinesh’s case. Vinesh, who was the petitioner, also attended the hearing virtually.

The Indian Olympic Association is hopeful that Vinesh will secure her joint silver. “The Indian Olympic Association remains hopeful of a positive resolution of the application of wrestler Vinesh Phogat before the Ad Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for failing to clear the weigh-in on the second day of her women’s 50kg wrestling competition at the Olympic Games Paris 2024,” the IOA statement said.

“As the matter is sub iudice, the IOA can only state that the Sole Arbitrator, Dr Annabelle Bennett AC SC (Australia), heard all parties, the applicant Vinesh Phogat, the respondents United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee, as well as the IOA as an interested party for three hours,” it added.
