Asaram Bapu: The Rajasthan High Court has granted relief to Asaram Bapu, who is serving life imprisonment in the case of rape of a minor girl. Asaram Bapu, who has been in jail for 11 years, was on Tuesday granted permission to undergo treatment for seven days at an Ayurvedic hospital in Maharashtra under police custody. Justice PS Bhati and Justice Munnuri Laxman of the Jodhpur bench of the High Court ordered that Asaram be kept in police custody for seven days for treatment at the hospital. The court has put Asaram on parole for 7 days. Let us tell you that Asaram, who was arrested in September 2013, was admitted to AIIMS Jodhpur for two days after suffering from a heart ailment.
Asaram had laid emphasis on Ayurvedic treatment.
Asaram had insisted on taking Ayurvedic treatment and had requested the court to allow him to be treated exclusively at the Madhavbagh Multidisciplinary Cardiac Care Clinic and Hospital in Pune. Earlier, also in March this year, Asaram had filed a petition in the High Court seeking 14-day parole. But following the Pune police report, the court rejected the petition. The police report expresses fear of a possible threat to law and order during Asaram’s stay in the hospital. Following this, Asaram was allowed to undergo Ayurvedic treatment for about a fortnight at a private hospital in Jodhpur.
The court had rejected the petition.
Asaram’s plea to stay his sentence on health grounds was earlier rejected by the High Court and the Supreme Court. Asaram was arrested in 2013 for allegedly raping a teenage girl at his ashram in Indore and was convicted by a special court constituted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2018.
In January 2023, a Gujarat court sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment in a decade-old sexual harassment case involving a female disciple. The victim, a resident of Surat, accused Asaram of raping her multiple times at his ashram in 2013.
