KEY POINTS
- A 16-foot-tall pigeon sculpture called Dinosaur will be displayed on the pedestal of New York City’s High Line starting in October.
- The artist Iván Argote conceptualized it as an anti-monument that challenged the grandeur of traditional sculptures.
- Pigeons evoke extreme reactions from New Yorkers, who either love or hate the ubiquitous bird, according to High Line director and curator Cecilia Alemani.
A height of 16 feet pigeon sculpture will rest on New York City (NYC). This monumental work, entitled “Dinosauris scheduled to land in The high linean elevated linear park built on a historic railway line, where it will remain on display for 18 months beginning in October.
The sculpture, created by Colombian artist Iván Argote, is a hyperrealistic depiction of New York’s unofficial avian mascot: the dove. It will replace Pamela Rosenkranz’s pink tree-like sculpture on the High Line’s pedestal and will be the fourth public art commission at the site.
Dinosaur, first presented in 2020 among 80 proposals, was conceived by Argote as a counter-monument or anti-monument. According to the artist, most monuments are built in memory of influential men, usually military men, so he created one to immortalize the common street pigeon.
“There are people who absolutely adore the pigeon community and are obsessed with it, and then there are people who are literally disgusted and horrified by pigeons.”
