An Indian travel influencer faces massive backlash on social media after expressing her opinion on the Calcutta Rape and murder case. Tanya Khanijow urged women abroad to “avoid coming to India” due to what she described as “horrible safety standards for women” in the country. Her post quickly gained momentum, with many condemning her comments and calling her “anti-national.”
Khanijow took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her concerns, stating, “The safety standards for women in India are horrendous. My sincere request to all my friends abroad: Please don’t travel here unless our leaders seriously create a safer environment for women. Avoid coming to India at all costs!”
Her comments sparked outrage, with some accusing her of defaming India and pandering to Western audiences. Others argued that women’s safety issues are not widespread, but isolated incidents. One user, Shantiswarup, wrote: “You should be ashamed to call yourself an Indian. The incident happened in one of the most peaceful states in India, where a woman is the Chief Minister and a flagbearer of democracy. And yet you are criticising the entire nation for being unsafe for women!”
Responding to the criticism, Khanijow defended her statement saying, “It is true and unless we acknowledge it, things will not change. I have faced assault in almost all parts of India. Our society at large is failing women. If we do not demand strict action, we cannot feel safe.”
Amid the controversy, there were calls to boycott her YouTube channel and Instagram account, with some urging her to leave the country and even suggesting she “go to Pakistan.”
However, support for Khanijow also emerged. User Shubham Dhal noted: “The replies disagreeing with Tanya are all from men. See the pattern? As a nation, we are not good at taking criticism and our only response is to get defensive, claiming that other countries are worse or that the problem doesn’t exist.”
Another user added: “Ignore the trolls – they are the reason women are not safe in this country. They need to change their mindset. If they can abuse and troll you here, they will do the same elsewhere. Women are not safe in this country, period.”
