‘Attempt to save the culprit…’: Rahul Gandhi denounces alleged cover-up in Kolkata doctor rape and murder case

Leader of the congress Raul Gandhi On Wednesday, Indian President Rahul Gandhi expressed deep shock over the brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, highlighting the growing insecurity among the medical community and women across the country. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi criticised alleged attempts to “save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim”, raising serious concerns about the hospital administration and local authorities.

“The way the nuances of this cruel and inhuman act are being revealed has created an atmosphere of fear. If doctors are not safe in a medical college, how can parents feel safe sending their daughters to study there?” Gandhi asked.

Reflecting on the broader issue of violence against women, Gandhi called for serious discussions and concrete steps to address the rising incidents, drawing parallels with the cases of Hathras, Unnao, Kathua and now Kolkata. She stressed that despite strict laws introduced after the Nirbhaya case, such crimes continue to occur.

“This incident has forced us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like a medical college, how can parents send their daughters to study abroad? Why even the strict laws enacted in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya case have failed to prevent such crimes? All parties, all sections of society will have to hold serious discussions and take concrete steps to deal with the increasing incidents against women, from Hathras to Unnao and from Kathua to Kolkata,” she said.

“I stand by the victim’s family in this unbearable pain. They must get justice at all costs and the culprits must be punished in such a way that it will set an example for society,” Rahul added.
