IndyCar’s David Malukas signs with AJ Foyt Racing

IndyCar driver David Malukas, who was fired for missing races due to injuries following a mountain bike crash, has signed a multi-year contract with AJ Foyt Racing.

The deal was announced Tuesday, more than three months after Malukas, 22, was released by Arrow McLaren without running an IndyCar race for the team due to a wrist injury from his crash.

“The history and success of both AJ Foyt Racing and AJ Foyt himself were key factors in my decision to join the team,” said Malukas. “Everyone knows AJ is a legend and he was someone whose name I always heard as a kid.

“Having the opportunity to work alongside him and drive for his team is very special. I am starting a new chapter in my IndyCar career and I am looking forward to achieving great results with AJ Foyt Racing.”

Malukas was signed by McLaren’s three-car IndyCar team in September after two-time series champion Alex Palou breached his contract and refused to join the team as planned for this season.

Malukas dislocated his wrist and tore tendons when he crashed on his mountain bike a month before the season-opening race.

The team had hoped the February 11 crash would keep Malukas out of two races, but he missed four in a row. His absence triggered a contractual clause that allowed McLaren to terminate the deal. He returned to racing in June for Meyer Shank Racing.

“David will be a great addition to AJ Foyt Racing,” said team president Larry Foyt. “He is a fierce competitor who possesses tremendous natural talent. I believe David will fit in perfectly with our engineers and mechanics and will be an important factor as we continue to move up the IndyCar ranks.”

The next IndyCar race is Saturday at the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in Madison, Illinois.
