Shark Tank’s Anupam Mittal criticizes Starbucks, says ‘more toxic than tobacco’

Starbucks has announced the departure of the CEO Laxman Narasimhan after just 16 months in charge. The company’s decision comes in response to falling sales. Narasimhan will be replaced by Brian Nichols, CEO of Chipotle.

Reacting to the news, Shark Tank Judge Anupam Mittal shared his thoughts on microblogging site X, formerly known as Twitter. He expressed concern about Starbucks’ current direction.

“Starbucks’ value erosion is inevitable unless it returns to its roots or reinvents its reason for being. Right now, it’s less of a coffee shop and more of a dessert shop with criminal levels of disguised sugar that makes people sick. It’s probably more toxic than the tobacco companies.”

Mittal later added: “But it was a good decision to bring Brian in.”

Other users of the platform echoed Mittal’s posts. One user mused: “I seriously wonder why there isn’t an equivalent in a modern cafeteria, with protein shakes, high protein foods, etc. Maybe @wholetruthfood could consider something as a pilot?” Mittal responded positively to the suggestion: “Great idea… if I find the time, I’ll get on with it.”

Another user commented on the general awareness of health issues in India, stating: “India is a lower-middle income country and if you talk to a normal person about sugar in food products, they will most likely laugh at you. People don’t care about health, all they care about is taste.”

Mittal disagreed with this view, responding: “…not true… people with lower incomes are not idiots.”

Summing up his views on Starbucks’ strategy, Mittal said: “Starbucks seems to be creating a stir… but not the kind you would want in your coffee. Maybe they need a little less sugar and a lot more espresso in their marketing strategy.”
