In her quest for the gold medal, Vinesh Phogat stayed awake before her weigh-in. She consumed no food or water. The three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist even cut her hair. But on the morning of her match, Vinesh was 100 grams overweight. She was disqualified from competing in the final. She appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Since Vinesh had qualified for the final when she was still under 50kg, she asked to be awarded the silver medal.

Fans were expecting a result on August 11, but it was later revealed that they had to wait until August 13.

On August 13, it was revealed that the decision would be announced on August 16.

The CAS rejected Vinesh’s appeal and announced that he would be awarded the silver medal. PT Usha, president of AIOissued a statement and expressed surprise at the decision taken by the CAS. Vinesh will return to India on August 17.
