Vinesh PhogatHopes of winning a silver medal were dashed when the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected his appeal. The star Indian wrestler had appealed to be awarded the joint silver medal. After some delays, the CAS announced its decision and broke the fanaticism of Indian fans. Vinesh competed in the 50kg freestyle wrestling.
She was India’s biggest hope for a medal and was assured of a silver medal. But Vinesh was unable to compete in the final. From disqualification to being deprived of the silver medal, here we take a look at the events that have unfolded over the past week.
Vinesh Phogat opened it. Olympics Campaign against Japanese Yui Susaki. She participated in probably the most difficult match of her career, as she faced the Japanese. She was on an unbeaten streak and had a record of 82-0. After the loss, Vienash defeated Oksana Livach and Pan American Games champion Yusneylys Guzman Lopez to qualify for the final.
Three wins on the opening day confirmed the silver medal for Vinesh. The record-breaking wrestler was just one win away from winning the gold medal.
In her quest for the gold medal, Vinesh Phogat stayed awake before her weigh-in. She consumed no food or water. The three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist even cut her hair. But on the morning of her match, Vinesh was 100 grams overweight. She was disqualified from competing in the final. She appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Since Vinesh had qualified for the final when she was still under 50kg, she asked to be awarded the silver medal.

Fans were expecting a result on August 11, but it was later revealed that they had to wait until August 13.
On August 13, it was revealed that the decision would be announced on August 16.
The CAS rejected Vinesh’s appeal and announced that he would be awarded the silver medal. PT Usha, president of AIOissued a statement and expressed surprise at the decision taken by the CAS. Vinesh will return to India on August 17.
