Independence Day 2024: Independence Day is a tribute to the brave freedom fighters who stood against the colonial regime, faced immense hardships, and sacrificed their lives for our nation. While some children may find history boring, you can make it interesting by inviting them to make creative crafts related to Independence Day.

Children love art and crafts, and this is a wonderful way to spark their interest in Indian history while spending quality time together. This hands-on approach not only makes learning fun, but also instills a sense of pride and connection with our nation’s heritage.

Here are some decoration ideas for this Independence Day celebration.

1. Handmade Indian flag

Materials: stick, graph papers (saffron, white and green colors), glue, blue marker, scissors

Instructions: This is the easiest of all. The homemade Indian flag is ideal for little champions. All you have to do is cut small, equal rectangles from the saffron, white and green graph papers and stick them together. In the middle of the white rectangle, draw “ashok chakra” with a blue marker. Stick the flag to a stick and decorate your wall with it.

2. Wall art

Materials: origami sheet, scissors, glue, pencil, eraser

Instructions: To make this decorative painting, you can let your creativity run wild. Take the base colors of the flag and make butterflies, birds, flowers, balloons or anything else using the colors saffron, white and green. You can create a beautiful design using paper cutting and folding techniques.

3. Tiranga windmill

Materials: Colored paper (saffron, white, green), pin, stick, scissors.

Instructions: Cut out three squares of colored paper, one in saffron, one in white, and one in green. The squares should be the same size. Attach them to a stick with a pin. Next, use a ruler and pencil to draw diagonal lines from each corner. Cut along each diagonal line, stopping about 1 inch from the center of the square. Take one corner of each triangle you created and fold it toward the center of the square and glue it down. Once all four corners are folded and glued in place, carefully insert a pin into the center of the pinwheel. Kids can decorate their pinwheels with glitter or stickers for an extra touch. Once decorated, blow on them and enjoy!

4. Tiranga paper fans

Materials: Colored paper (saffron, white, green), glue, straw.

Instructions: Cut three strips of colored paper, one saffron colored, one white colored, and one green colored. Next, start with the saffron colored paper strip. Fold the strip back and forth in an accordion fashion, making sure each fold is about 1 inch wide. Repeat this same step with all the other colors. Once all three strips are folded, line them up so the edges of the folds match up. Bring the bottom edge of the accordion folded paper together and secure with glue or a staple. Take a straw and glue it to the back of the gathered end of the fan. Once the stick is secured, gently fan the paper from the bottom to the top. Let the kids add their personal touches to their craft to make it more fun.

5. Bouquet of flowers

Materials: colored tissue papers (saffron, white, green), green pipe cleaners, scissors, glue.

Instructions: Take the tissue paper in the three colors of the Indian flag and cut each sheet into squares. Stack 6-8 squares of tissue paper on top of each other. Using scissors, cut the stacked squares into petal shapes. Once you have cut all the petals, stack them together. Pinch the center of the stacked tissue paper petals and gently twist them. Secure the twisted center with a green pipe cleaner. Starting with the top layer, carefully separate each layer of tissue paper, pulling it toward the center to fluff the petals. Once you have made a sufficient number of flowers, gather the stems of the pipe cleaners together to form a bouquet. These flowers can be decorated in a vase in your home. You can also use colored graph paper if you cannot find tissue paper.

6. Tiranga to hang on the wall

Materials: Colored ribbons (saffron, white, green), wooden hoop, glue, scissors, ruler.

Instructions: Start by cutting several long strips of saffron, white and green ribbon. Make sure each ribbon is the same length for a balanced look. Next, divide the ribbons into three groups based on color.

Start with the saffron ribbons and carefully attach them to the bottom half of the hoop, one by one, making sure they are placed close together to create a vibrant and lively effect. Move on to the white ribbons and then the green ones, filling the edge of the hoop halfway with the tricolours of the Indian flag.

For the other empty half of the hoop, let your creativity run wild! You can continue the ribbon pattern, weave in some tricolor flowers, or add other embellishments like beads or tassels. Let your imagination run wild as you create a unique, patriotic decoration.

7. Quilling of monuments

Materials: Quilling tool, graph paper (saffron, white, green), scissors, pencil, glue

Instructions: To create a quilling masterpiece, start by sketching the outline of a historically significant monument on paper. Once you have finished the sketch, cut long, thin strips of graph paper in saffron, white and green.

Instead of colouring the monument, use quilling strips to bring it to life. Start quilling by rolling the strips into tight spirals, then shape and carefully place them within the sketch. Fill the entire monument with the tricoloured feathers, creating a vibrant and textured tribute to India’s heritage.

8. Tricolor flower

Materials: Paints (saffron, white, green), glue, pencil, cardboard, scissors.

Instructions: Start by taking plastic spoons and carefully cutting off the heads using scissors. Once you have separated the heads from the spoons, paint each one in the colors of the Indian flag: saffron, white, and green. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Next, take a circular piece of cardboard and arrange the painted spoons on it in a pattern that resembles a flower. Place the saffron-coloured spoons on the outer edge, followed by the white ones in the middle and the green ones in the centre. This arrangement will create a visually appealing representation of the tricolour.

Attach each spoon head to the cardboard with glue or tape, making sure they are well-adhered and evenly spaced. To add a finishing touch, you can also paint or decorate the center of the cardboard to enhance the overall look of your patriotic flower. Once everything is dry and ready, you can display your creation as a festive decoration for Independence Day or other patriotic events.

9. Wind Chime with CD

Materials: Paints, old CDs, string, beads.

Instructions: Cut several pieces of string about 30 cm long each. Use old CDs and paint them saffron, white and green to create patriotic patterns on the strings. Thread the CDs onto the strings, alternating the colors in a pattern that resembles the Indian flag or other patriotic designs. Once the strings are decorated, tie each end of the strings to a wooden hoop or stick to form the base of the wind chime.

Attach more pieces of string to the ring to create a hanger for the wind chime. Make sure the strings are evenly spaced and tied tightly. Hang the finished wind chime outside or in a place where it can catch a breeze. As the wind blows, the CDs will create a soft, melodic sound, adding a patriotic touch to your space.

10. Indian flag with handprints

Materials: White sheet, Saffron, white, blue and green paints, Paintbrush

Instructions: Start by laying out a large sheet of white paper on a flat surface. Prepare the saffron, white, and green paints. Dip one hand into the saffron paint and press it onto the top section of the paper to create the first row of handprints. Wash the paint off your hand thoroughly. Next, dip your hand into the white paint and press it onto the middle section of the paper, making sure the handprints are evenly spaced. Wash the paint off your hand again. Finally, dip your hand into the green paint and press it onto the bottom section of the paper to complete the third row of handprints. Allow the paint to dry completely. For more detail, you can paint a small blue circle or the Ashoka Chakra in the center of the white handprint section once the background has dried.
