The High Court asked the President of the Assembly for a response

Calcutta.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Subhendu Adhikari and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh had approached the Calcutta High Court to allow entry of Central Army personnel deployed for the security of BJP MLAs in the Assembly premises. While hearing the case on Wednesday, High Court judge Shampa Sarkar had sought an affidavit from Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee and Secretary Sukumar Roy. The judge also sought a reply from the Assembly on why there are different rules regarding “security guards” of MLAs in the Assembly. The petitioner complained that state police personnel are allowed to enter the Assembly premises but Central Army personnel have been barred from entering.

During the hearing of the case on Wednesday, Justice Shampa Sarkar asked that if Trinamool MLAs can enter the Assembly with the state police, then why can’t BJP MLAs enter with central forces? Why is the Assembly Speaker’s stance different regarding security personnel?

The next hearing in the case will be on September 12.

It is noteworthy that Trinamool MLAs in the state get security from the state police. At the same time, the security of BJP MLAs is usually provided by Central Army personnel. In such a situation, Justice Shampa Sarkar has sought an affidavit from the Speaker and Secretary of the Assembly on the stand of the MLAs vis-a-vis the “bodyguards”. The next hearing in this case is on September 12.
