PM Modi set to deliver 11th consecutive Independence Day speech

New Delhi: Prime minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag for the 11th consecutive time at the Red Fort, marking the centrepiece of Indian history. Independence Day This milestone surpasses the previous record of 10 times held by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and puts Modi behind Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, who addressed the nation from the ramparts 17 and 16 times respectively.

Prime Minister Modi’s speech will be the first Independence Day During his third term, the theme of “Viksit Bharat” (developed India) is expected to be a central plank of his speech, reflecting his government’s vision of a developed nation. However, there is speculation that Modi may address the current crisis in Bangladeshparticularly attacks on the Hindu minority, an issue that has been highlighted by Hindutva groups.

The Prime Minister is also expected to discuss his government’s mandate for a third term, albeit with a reduced majority, and review the impact of reforms, development programmes and welfare measures implemented over the past decade. Observers will be interested to see whether Modi announces new initiatives or expands existing welfare schemes, especially as the opposition has intensified its focus on populist welfare promises.

Jammu and Kashmir, a recurring theme in Prime Minister Modi’s speeches on August 15, is likely to figure prominently. The government’s efforts to reshape the Union Territory’s security and development landscape, especially following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, have faced challenges, including the recent terror incidents in the Jammu division. The Supreme Court has ordered holding of assembly elections before September 30, which could also be taken up.

In addition, Prime Minister Modi can point to important decisions taken since his third term began in June, including expansions of housing schemes for the poor, major infrastructure projects and proposed changes to Waqf board regulations. These measures have sparked considerable debate, with criticism from opposition parties.
