Tamil Nadu to inaugurate China-style industrial housing complex for workers in presence of Foxconn chief

The Tamil Nadu government will inaugurate an industrial housing facility for Foxconn and other industrial workers on August 17.

TN Chief Minister MK Stalin will inaugurate the Vallam Vadagal Industrial Housing Project with Foxconn Chairman Young Liu. TN government sources said the industrial housing facility is modeled after similar projects in China and Vietnam.

Taiwan-based tech group Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, is Apple’s largest iPhone supplier in India. The company has implemented a similar model in China, providing workers with housing near its factories and managing the supply of food and medicine to boost production.

In 2020, the TN government approved the creation of an industrial housing facility for Foxconn and other industrial workers. “The industrial housing project at Vallam Vadagal is a testament to Tamil Nadu’s capabilities. It showcases our innovative policies, collaboration with the private sector and efficient execution of large-scale projects. This initiative also reflects our commitment to sustainability and increasing women’s participation in the workforce by providing safe and secure housing,” said TN Industries Minister TRB Rajaa.

The project, costing around Rs 706.5 crore, is located in SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) Industrial Park, Vallam Vadagal, Sriperumbudur taluk, Kancheepuram district, and is spread over 20 acres. It can accommodate 18,720 workers in 13 blocks. Each block has a stilt plus 10 floors with 24 rooms per floor. Each room will have 6 beds (dormitory), with 240 rooms and 1,440 occupants per block.

While SIPCOT will be responsible for maintaining the roads, sewage treatment plant, solar panel system, electrical substation and fire extinguishers, Foxconn will handle basic services and day-to-day functions such as security, maintenance, sanitation and kitchen operations. The facility will also include a kitchen building, canteen, reverse osmosis plant, water dispensers, recreational areas, CCTV installations, sanitary napkin incinerators, mosquito nets and solar water heaters.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Liu in Delhi on August 14. “I highlighted to him the wonderful opportunities that India offers in futuristic sectors. We also had excellent discussions on his investment plans in India in states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh,” Modi said in a post on X.

Liu is expected to visit Bengaluru to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Minister for Large and Medium Industries MB Patil on August 16. Liu will also visit Foxconn’s under-construction manufacturing plant near Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, where work is progressing.
