‘Modern slavery’: HR asks for leave for ‘Raksha Bandhan’ and is fired

A human resources manager in Punjab was abruptly fired after an altercation with her boss over a licensing policy For the Raksha Bandhan festival. The manager, who publicly shared her terrible experience in LinkedInrevealed that she was fired after opposing the company’s decision to impose harsh sanctions on employees who wanted to take leave on August 19.

According to screenshots of WhatsApp messages between the HR director and her boss, Kunal Kakkar, the company implemented a new rule that would deduct seven days’ salary from employees who took leave on Raksha Bandhan instead of the usual day. Kakkar justified the decision as necessary to maintain “team unity” and warned that anyone who disagreed could resign.

The human resources director argued that the policy was not a “fair practice under the law” nor did it comply with “fundamental rights.” Despite her objections, she was met with resistance from her boss, who was adamant in his desire to enforce the rule. Her anti-policy stance ultimately led to her dismissal.

In her LinkedIn post, the HR manager explained, “I tried to stand up for what was wrong under the laws but I received a termination letter. In the email, she mentioned that she would give me two weeks time but revoked all access so I could leave immediately.” She also shared the WhatsApp exchange with Kakkar, which has since gone viral.

Following the public revelation of the facts, the company, identified as B9 Solutions, issued a statement denying her claims. It said the HR director had received multiple warnings before her dismissal for various reasons, including excessive phone use, neglect of her duties and attempting to manipulate management by organizing a long period of leave from August 15 to 20.

The company criticised her for “playing the victim card” to gain sympathy online. “It is very easy to play the victim card and gain sympathy,” the company’s statement said. “Did Babina tell anyone that she had received several warnings before her dismissal?”

Despite the company’s defense, social media users largely sided with the HR director and condemned the company’s actions. One user called the policy “tyranny,” while another questioned whether corporate life was “bringing back slavery.” A third user expressed concern about the broader issue of employee harassment in India, highlighting the struggle to balance work and personal life, especially during major cultural festivals.
