After a four-year hiatus, North Korea According to reports, they are expected to welcome international tourists again. The isolated nation, known for its strict lockdown, has finally decided to reopen its borders, offering an opportunity for intrepid travelers to experience one of the world’s most enigmatic destinations.

Aljazeera cited Beijing-based Koryo Tours as announcing on its website that North Korea would welcome tourists to the northeastern city of Samjiyon and “probably the rest of the country” in December 2024. “After waiting more than four years to make this announcement, Koryo Tours is very excited about opening up North Korean tourism once again,” the operator said.

The country, which had closed its borders since 2020, had recently allowed the passage of only about 100 Russian tourists, who were travelling on a North Korean-owned Air Koryo plane from Vladivostok.

All about Samjiyon

Samjiyon is becoming a focal point for North Korea’s tourism recovery. Located near the sacred Mount Paektu, the town has undergone a dramatic transformation, touted by the regime as a model of “socialist utopia.” With new apartments, hotels, a ski resort and modern amenities, Samjiyon offers a stark contrast to North Korea’s often austere image. While beautifully designed, visitors can expect to see a carefully constructed display of the nation’s development and aspirations.

While the news of the reopening is exciting, it is essential to approach North Korea with caution. The country’s tourism industry is tightly controlled and visitors are subject to strict regulations. Travelers can expect highly structured itineraries, constant surveillance and limited freedom of movement.
