Speaking at an event organised for the 78th Independence Day in the national capital Delhi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said, “This is the day that reminds us to discharge our duties towards each other and the nation in realising all the values of the Constitution.” Emphasising on the importance of independence, Justice DY Chandrachud said that India had chosen the option of independence in 1950.
The Chief Justice said, “What is happening in Bangladesh today is a clear reminder of how precious both of these things are, it reminds us what the price of freedom is!”
He further said that this morning I was reading an article by a Karnataka singer, named ‘Sounds of Freedom’, today many young lawyers are from the post-independence generation, but many of you are from the post-emergency generation. It is easy to take freedom lightly, to understand how important it is, it is important to look at the stories of the past.
‘Bar members are an important link between judges’
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, “Bar lawyers have been a force for good in our country. Courts work to keep rights and freedom alive, Bar members are an important link between the people and the judges. They give us an opportunity to see the pain of the people.”

The Chief Justice further said that litigants from villages to metros are demanding justice. The legal community allows the court to deliver justice. Last year I talked about improving infrastructure. We have taken many basic measures in the last 6 months. Fiber optics internet has been expanded, cubicles have been built for lawyers on the waiting list for chambers, a new lounge has been built for women members of the bar. This is just the beginning.
‘In my 25 years of experience…’
The Chief Justice further said that in my 25 years of judgeship, my experience is that the courts work hard to make the life of the common man easier. Protection of the dignity of women is a part of our culture. Our learned poets have mentioned this.
