According to student body APPSC, non-vegetarian food is banned in one of the canteens at IIT Bombay.

A student association has complained that non-vegetarian food is not allowed in one of the canteens at the Indian Institute of Technology (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Bombay here. In a post on X, the Bombay Institute of Technology Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle Unit (APPSC), a left-leaning organisation, said non-vegetarian food was not allowed in the Amul Canteen mess. The institute has several mess halls on its premises.

“The vegetarian purists at @iitbombay are back! The above-mentioned canteen doesn’t even have a properly enclosed dining area, but they are obsessed with creating more and more enclosures for ‘pure vegetarians’. #UCinsecurities,” the APPSC said. It also posted a picture of a notice that read, “Amul canteen is a purely vegetarian restaurant. Bringing of non-vegetarian food items even into the canteen dining hall is strictly prohibited.”

When contacted, there was no reaction from IIT Bombay. Last year, some students protested against alleged segregation of tables for vegetarians and non-vegetarians at the institute. The APPSC claimed that a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on those who protested.
