In a major shock to football fans, the organisers of the 2024 Durand Cup have cancelled the Mohun Bagan Super Giants vs Emami East Bengal match in Kolkata on Saturday, August 17. Due to the ongoing protests in Kolkata, the organisers have cancelled the football derby which was scheduled to be held at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.
Both teams picked up one point each, which helped defending champions Mohun Bagan secure their place in the quarter-finals. East Bengal are also still alive for the knockout round as one of the top two teams in second place in the group stage.
The match, billed as India’s biggest football derby, was expected to draw a large crowd at the stadium. However, the organisers decided to cancel the match, mindful of the protests that erupted over the shocking rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
Meanwhile, organisers are reportedly looking to shift the remaining matches in Kolkata to the Jamshedpur venue – the JRD Tata Sports Complex.
Mohun Bagan secures quarter-final spot
A point helped 17-time Durand Cup champions Mohun Bagan secure a place in the quarter-finals as Group A leaders. Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal remain unbeaten with two wins from their respective opening two matches, but the former leads the table due to a superior goal difference.
The leaders of each of the six groups will progress to the quarter-final round, while the two spots will be filled by the two best second-placed teams. East Bengal and Punjab Football Club currently lead those two qualification spots with seven points each.
FC Goa, with six points, will take on Shillong Lajong in the final Group F match and a possible draw or win would help them overtake East Bengal in the race for the quarter-finals.
