‘Wealth is in the hands of a few, while many struggle for a double meal’: Supreme Court judge points to wealth inequality in India – VIDEO

Cochin: Supreme Court Judge, Justice BR Gavai He pointed out that all the wealth in India is concentrated in a few people while the majority of the people in the country cannot afford to eat twice.

Judge BR Gavai He was speaking at the inauguration of India’s first digital court in Kochi. He was referring to Dr. B. R. AmbedkarAmbedkar’s speech during the final constitutional debate in November 1949, where he noted that the country was then devoid of social and economic inequality.

Reflecting on society after 78 years of Independence, he said that although politically our country has achieved equality, social and economic justice and inequality still prevail in the country.

“Dr Ambedkar said that at the political level we have achieved equality and justice by establishing that one person has one vote. But what about economic inequality and social justice? We have a society compartmentalized into strict categories where people cannot move from one compartment to another.”

He pointed out how the country still turns a blind eye to all these inequalities, which has led to an unfair economy where people struggle to eat their daily meals.

“On the economic level, we have a society in which all the wealth of the country is concentrated in the hands of the rich, while the vast majority find it difficult to even have two meals a day.”

He also said that as a country, India should try to implement all possible measures to eradicate this inequality, otherwise the democracy that has been built would collapse drastically.
