Foxconn Chairman Young Liu said on Saturday that the company hires employees regardless of gender, but in India women, especially married women, have contributed greatly to its efforts.
The president of the Taiwan-based iPhone maker was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of its women-only residential complex here.
Foxconn’s chairman said there is an upward trend in all kinds of hiring by the major Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company in India.
“Foxconn hires regardless of gender, but women make up a large portion of our workforce here. I want to emphasize that married women contribute greatly to the efforts we are making here,” Liu said.
The Taiwanese company recently faced accusations of discrimination in hiring married women. A report claimed that the electronics manufacturing giant was opposed to hiring married women in India.
Foxconn denied the report, saying 25 percent of its new hires were married women.
The company said at the time that the Foxconn factory had about 70 percent women and 30 percent men and that the Tamil Nadu plant was the factory with the highest female employment in the country.
Liu said the women’s residential complex offers employees living away from home peace of mind and a shorter commute to work.
“This residential complex is now an important part of Foxconn in Tamil Nadu. It adds to our commitment to sustainability in India. For example, we are achieving Zero Landfill Waste validation in Asia, America and Europe. We are also implementing zero liquid discharge technology, energy saving equipment and rain harvesting in India,” he said.
Foxconn’s chairman said sustainability is not just about cleaner, greener infrastructure, but also about growing a community.
“Opportunities for women in India go hand in hand with health and safety at work. Having a sustainable living environment helps them succeed,” Liu said.
The complex, built by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, will house over 18,000 female Foxconn employees in shared quarters.
The project is spread over an area of 20 acres and was constructed at a total cost of around Rs 706 crore.
