Bhadra is the sister of Shani Dev, the deity of justice, and the daughter of Surya Dev and Goddess Chhaya. Bhadra is known for her fiery temper and terrifying appearance. According to mythology, Bhadra, upon her birth, started causing chaos and destruction, disrupting sacred rituals and spreading distress across the world. Witnessing her malevolent nature, Surya Dev became anxious to know how to arrange her marriage. When all the gods rejected Bhadra’s marriage proposal, Surya Dev sought the help of Lord Brahma.
Lord Brahma blessed Bhadra with the boon that he would reside at the times and places where auspicious and sacred activities are performed. He declared, “O Bhadra, you will reside in the seventh Karan, at the end of the Bava, Balava, Kaulava and Taitila Karans.” Thus Brahma allotted a portion of time to Bhadra.
Bhadra accepted Brahma’s words and took his place in a segment of time. Accordingly, one should not start auspicious activities during Bhadra Kaal, as any ceremony performed during this time is believed to be fruitless.
