Pakistan is all set to take on Bangladesh in a two-match Test series in a bid to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the final of the 2025 World Test Championship. The series begins on August 21. All eyes will be on Pakistan’s star batsman. Babar Azamas he returns to the longest format of the game. The former Pakistan Test captain will have the opportunity in this series to reach a milestone that even Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma They haven’t managed to arrive yet.
Babar Azam currently has 2661 runs in the World Test Championship. If in the two matches of the Bangladesh Test series, Babar manages to score 339 runs, he will reach 3000 runs in the WTC. He would thus reach the mark before Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While Rohit is India’s leading run-scorer in the WTC with 2552 runs, Virat Kohli has scored 2235 runs in the history of the competition.
If Babar manages to do so, he will become the first Pakistani batsman to score 3000 runs in WTC history. He would be the fourth batsman overall to reach the milestone after Joe Root, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith and Ben Stokes.
The first match of the Pakistan-Bangladesh series will be played in Rawalpindi. The second match will be played behind closed doors in Karachi due to renovation work being carried out at the National Stadium.
In a statement made by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), they have stated that spinner Abrar Ahmed and top-order batsman Kamran Ghulam have been released by the team to join the Pakistan Shaheens squad for the second 4-day match against Bangladesh. The PCB has informed that they have taken this decision as Pakistan has opted to go for an all-out pace attack against Bangladesh in the first Test in Rawalpindi. Instead of benching lone spinner Abrar Ahmed for this Test, he can now get some match practice ahead of the second Test in Karachi on August 30.
