According to state media TASS, the eruption ejected a huge ash column up to eight kilometers high and released a significant lava flow. So far, no injuries have been reported.

“According to visual assessments, the ash column rises up to 8 kilometers (5 miles) above sea level,” TASS reported Sunday morning local time.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck 90 kilometers (56 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city in Russia’s eastern Kamchatka region, at 10:10 p.m. Moscow time Saturday. The quake, with a depth of 49 kilometers (30 miles), was felt across the Kamchatka Peninsula, including in Vilyuchinsk, Yelizovo and Klyuchi. Shiveluch is about 450 kilometers (280 miles) from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Although no major damage has been reported from the quake, TASS reported that buildings are being inspected for possible damage.

Volcano Discovery, a real-time earthquake tracking website, received several reports of tremors.

“Glasses shattered, chandeliers fell and the entire building shook,” one person reported.

Another resident shared: “We were at the gas station when the pump started shaking and the cover over the cars was swaying. The cars were shaking a lot.”

A third person commented: “Furniture was shaking, small objects were falling, plates were rattling and cups were falling.”

The US Tsunami Warning System had warned that “dangerous tsunami waves could be produced by this earthquake within a radius of 300 km.” [approx 186 miles] from the epicenter along the coast of Russia.”

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there is no tsunami threat to California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia or Alaska.
