Railways introduces advanced water level monitoring system in trains; Brahmaputra Mail to be first to be equipped

Guwahati City: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is constantly making dedicated efforts to integrate modern technologies such as Artificial intelligence and IoT-based devices in their operations, to improve both passenger safety and comfort.

In one of those significant steps, a breakthrough Water level monitoring system on trains was inaugurated on Friday, August 16 in the Brahmaputra Mail Express train at Kamakhya Railway Station by General Manager/NFR Chetan Kumar Shrivastava.

This innovative system represents a major step forward in water management on long-distance trains, designed to ensure continuous and reliable water availability for passengers.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, said the water level gauge, a real-time water monitoring system, has been installed as a pilot project on a line of the Brahmaputra Mail Express.

“This advanced solution offers continuous and accurate monitoring of water levels in train water tanks. It uses LoRa and GPRS-based communication, enabling long-range, low-power wireless data transmission, making it particularly suitable for remote locations. The system features real-time programmable data logging and storage, with data captured and transmitted via a hydrostatic pressure sensor that measures water levels with 0.5% accuracy over a range of 1 m to 5 m, even in temperatures from 0 degrees C to 70 degrees C. The system also includes an integrated real-time clock to synchronize data logging with precise timestamps, aiding in accurate data analysis and ensuring efficient water management,” said NF Railway’s CPRO.

He further stated that this initiative reflects Northeast Frontier Railway’s commitment to leverage technology to enhance the travel experience of passengers. “By ensuring round-the-clock availability of water, the water level indicator will become an essential tool in maintaining high service standards on long-distance routes. NFR, in line with Indian Railways, highlighted the importance of such innovative deployments on its long-distance trains, noting that successful implementation of this pilot project could lead to wider applications on other trains, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of water management systems during rail journeys. Passengers travelling on the Brahmaputra Mail Express can now enjoy a more comfortable journey, with the assurance of a reliable water supply throughout their journey,” said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma.
