BMW recalls over 14 lakh vehicles in China

According to the report, vehicles that have been reconditioned with steering wheels could be equipped with faulty airbags from Japanese automaker Takata. If not repaired, the faulty elements can cause injuries to occupants, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation.

The affected airbags can rupture, causing fragments to fly out and damage to the airbags. The affected units were manufactured between 2013 and 2017. According to AFP, the recall affects 600,000 domestically manufactured vehicles and 760,000 imported vehicles.

BMW has announced that it will replace the front airbags of vehicles found to be defective free of charge, AFP reports. It said that millions of cars equipped with Takata airbags have been subject to recalls since 2014, with the company filing for bankruptcy three years later. In 2021, Ford also recalled three million vehicles with Takata airbags, the publication said. Earlier this year, approximately 400,000 BMW cars in the United States were recalled for the same problem.
