Cognizant responds to criticism over low pay, explains 2.5 LPA offer

Cognizant says it offers between 400,000 and 120,000 salaries to engineering graduates

Competent It addressed ongoing criticism over the salary of new employees, particularly the controversy surrounding an annual package of Rs 250,000 for new hires. In response, the global IT services giant clarified that this figure applies exclusively to college students who do not have an engineering background, while engineering graduates receive significantly higher compensation.

Surya Gummadi, executive vice president and president of Cognizant Americas, offered an explanation in a statement, emphasizing that the Rs 2.52 lakh salary is for candidates with a three-year college degree outside the engineering field. Gummadi noted that fresh engineering graduates at Cognizant receive more generous compensation, with annual packages ranging up to Rs 12 lakh.

“Our annual compensation for fresh engineering graduates ranges from INR 400,000 to INR 120,000 per annum, depending on the hiring category, skill set, and industry-accredited advanced certifications. The compensation we offer to engineering graduates is highly competitive within the IT services peer group,” Gummadi said.

In addition to competitive salaries, Gummadi highlighted Cognizant’s commitment to talent development. He revealed that the firm invests between Rs 200,000-300,000 per associate during their initial years to provide training, mentoring and coaching in advanced technologies. This investment extends to both engineering and non-engineering associates, ensuring that all employees are well prepared to excel in a rapidly changing industry.

Cognizant has also expanded its presence in India, opening new centres in Bhubaneshwar and Indore and expanding its operations in Hyderabad. These expansions are part of a broader strategy to bring offices closer to employees’ homes, improving work-life balance and reducing commuting times.

In response to concerns about salary increases, Cognizant reiterated its commitment to maintaining competitive compensation. The company implemented merit-based salary increases this year, which are aligned with individual performance and industry trends. This is the fourth increase for many associates in the past three years.

In its statement, Cognizant said, “We are one of the few IT companies in India that have given out both raises and bonuses this year. These raises are just one component of the overall rewards package.”
