New railway lines to speed up transport of minerals from C’garh | News

The two new railway line projects proposed in coal and iron rich areas of Chhattisgarh will facilitate speedy transportation of minerals from the northern and southern regions of the state to different parts of the country, besides helping in social and economic development of these areas.

The Ministry of Railways has approved a substantial financial allocation of Rs 16.75 crore (Rs 12.25 crore for Gadchiroli to Bacheli line (via Bijapur) and Rs 4.50 crore for Korba to Ambikapur line) for the final study and Detailed Project Reports (DPR) of the two major new railway line projects.

Both projects will be executed by South East Central Railway (SECR), which is based in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh.

The 180-km railway line from Korba to Ambikapur is being constructed with an aim to connect important areas of the state with the railway network, while the 490-km line from Gadchiroli to Bacheli is being developed with an aim to establish better rail connectivity of the state with Maharashtra and border areas of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha.

The Korba-Ambikapur railway line will connect two important cities known for having rich coal reserves. Ambikapur is the headquarters of Sarguja division, which has coal mines. Some mines are under development. By connecting the region with another coal mining area of Korba, the project will help in the quick evacuation of coal.

Similarly, the new railway line from Gadchiroli to Bacheli in Dantewada district will connect remote areas of Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh with the railway network, thereby contributing to the social, economic and educational development of these areas and providing new employment opportunities in the area.

Bacheli has a huge reserve of iron ore. However, the evacuation of minerals is done from Visakhapatnam as Bacheli has no direct rail link to central or northern India. The project connecting Bacheli with Gadchiroli will help in transporting minerals to other parts of the country, especially to the northern and western regions by the shortest route.

Currently, work is underway in Chhattisgarh on 25 new railway line projects of 2,731 km at a cost of Rs 37,018 crore.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for expediting the scheme and said the projects would boost development in Bastar and Surguja regions.
