Murder of a doctor in Kolkata : On the orders of the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the rape and murder case of a female post-graduate student (PGT) doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Protests are being expressed not only in the state but also in other parts of the country over the said incident. Rajya Sabha member and senior Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Shekhar Roy has already expressed his support for those demanding justice and punishment for the culprits in the case. Meanwhile, Rai has demanded interrogation of former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandeep Rai and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal in CBI custody in the rape and murder case of a female doctor, due to which political turmoil has started. On one hand, his party leaders are opposing Rai’s statement while opposition parties are justifying their demand.
What did TMC MP Sukhendu Shekhar say?
The Trinamool MP posted on the social media platform: The CBI should function impartially. The former director of RG Kar Medical College and the police commissioner who is in custody need to be questioned to find out who and why fabricated the story that the doctor had committed suicide. Why was the wall of the corridor broken? Whose cooperation made Rai (Sanjay Rai, the accused arrested in the case) influential? Why were spy dogs used after three days? There are 100 such issues that they should talk about.
TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh called the statement unfortunate.
trinamool Former state general secretary of the party Kunal Ghosh has expressed his opposition to this demand by MP Rai. He said, “I too, like RG Kar, demand justice for the incident at the hospital, but I strongly oppose the demand of the Trinamool MP regarding the Kolkata Police Commissioner. As far as I know, he (the Police Commissioner) has done his best after getting information about the incident that happened at the hospital. Personally, the CP was doing his job and the investigation was going in a positive direction. This kind of social media post about him is unfortunate, it was made by a senior leader of my party.”
Opposition parties expressed their support for the demand.
Sukhendu Shekhar Rai’s demand has been supported by the Congress. On its part, it was said that it is commendable that Trinamool leader Rai has opposed the alleged efforts to cover up this heinous crime. Congress state unit spokesperson Soumya Aich Rai said, “I express my gratitude to Sukhendu Shekhar Rai for his stand despite belonging to the ruling party.” Communist Party of Marxists (CPI-M) leader Dr Sujan Chakraborty said that the Left party has been demanding the same demands made by Rai for the past few days.
The family had already said that the daughter had committed suicide.
The doctor’s parents have already claimed that on the morning of August 9, they were informed over the phone that their daughter had committed suicide at the hospital where she works. However, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal has already told the media that no one from the police called the parents to inform them that their daughter had committed suicide. Sandeep Ghosh, the principal of the medical college at the time of the crime, has been questioned by the CBI for three consecutive days, i.e. also on Sunday.
