Not many travelers have heard of Koh Lanta, ThailandPhuket’s quietest island. And why would they? Most people head to this island nation for its vibrant nightlife, white sandy beaches and sea of vitamins. But if you, like us, crave a slice of tropical island life without having to fight for a spot on a crowded beach or in a bar in central Phuket, then read up on Koh Lanta.

This lesser-known paradise, an archipelago of small islands south of Krabi, offers a serene getaway for beach lovers. With lush jungles, vibrant coral reefs, secluded beaches and (almost) perfect weather, it brings together the best of Thailand, without the crowds that now throng this country.

Koh Phee Island

Just off the east coast of Koh Lanta lies this skull-shaped island that has a cavernous “eye socket”-shaped entrance with stunning views. Most travelers explore this natural wonder by kayak or by joining a guided tour, navigating rocky waters and marveling at stalactites and stalagmites. For variety, you can also take a kayak cruise through the turquoise waters around Talabeng and Tung Yee Peng islands or dive into the nearby mangrove forests.

Mai Kaew Cave

Located on the island of Koh Lanta, a trek through this hidden cave is a unique experience. A trail leads you into a beautiful limestone cave where you can explore a wealth of rock formations as well as local flora and fauna. The cave is dark and slippery, with stairs and crevices to crawl through, so hiring a guide is highly recommended.
