Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte aggravates sprained ankle in loss to Tampa Bay

Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte aggravated his sprained left ankle when he blocked his swing Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Marte was out of the starting lineup after being the designated hitter on Saturday following a three-game absence. The infielder entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning but fell to the ground after a check swing and needed help getting off the field.

“I have no updates,” manager Torey Lovullo said after his team lost 8-7 in 12 innings. “We’re just evaluating him now. Nothing more than what we saw originally. He didn’t look great. He creates a lot of power when he drives off the ground. He’s a very strong guy. He just got it.

“We probably need to reevaluate and figure out how quickly we can get him back,” Lovullo added.

Two other key players for Arizona, first baseman Christian Walker (left oblique strain) and catcher Gabriel Moreno (left adductor strain), are on the injured list.

Despite injuries, the Diamondbacks have a NL wild card after going 28-13 since early July.

The Rays’ three-game sweep of Arizona marked the Diamondbacks’ first three-game losing streak since June 26-28.
