A new murder case has been registered against former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 62 others, including members of her former cabinet, in connection with the death of a fish trader amid protests over quota reform in the country, according to a media report on Monday.
The case was filed on Sunday night and is the latest in a series of legal actions against the 76-year-old leader following her resignation and subsequent flight to India on August 5 after widespread student protests against the government’s job quota system.
Shahnaz Begum, the widow of Md Milon, who was fatally shot on July 21 while returning from a local fish market, filed the suit, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.
The list of accused includes Hasina, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former lawmaker Shamim Osman and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, among others.
The report details that Awami League leaders and activists, led by Hasina, and their allied groups, armed with firearms and sticks, obstructed traffic on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to interfere with the student protests. The allegations claim that Hasina, Quader and Asaduzzaman orchestrated the shooting and assault on protesters and the general public.
Milon, who was heading home from the fish market at the time, received a bullet wound in the chest and collapsed on the road. He was rushed to the nearby Pro-Active Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead, the report added.
The incident brings the number of cases against Hasina since her ouster to more than a dozen.
Following the overthrow of Hasina’s Awami League-led government, more than 230 people have been killed in the ensuing violence across the country, taking the death toll to more than 600 since major student protests began in mid-July.
Following the collapse of Hasina’s administration, an interim government was established, with 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as its chief adviser.
