Amid massive protests over the rape and murder case in Kolkata, the Centre on Monday issued an order to increase security by 25% in all central government medical hospitals. While issuing the order, the Centre said that the number of marshals will also be increased based on the need in the hospitals. A committee will be formed under the chairmanship of the DGHS and he will take suggestions on the problems of the doctors.

Union Health Secretary Apoorva Chandra issued the order and said that basic problems of doctors like toilets and CCTV facilities will be addressed and an order has been issued to register FIR within 6 hours in case of violence.

He said 26 states already have laws to protect health workers and security personnel will be increased by 25 per cent in central government hospitals as required. He said the number of marshals will be increased and an order has been issued for the same.

The Centre said in the order that an on-call room will be set up to resolve doctors’ issues and CCTV cameras will be installed for the safety of doctors in the hospital. If any incident is reported, a complaint will be filed within six hours. Previously, the victim had to file a complaint.

Meanwhile, health services remained affected at state-run hospitals in West Bengal on Monday as junior doctors continued their stop-work protest over the rape and murder of a colleague at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The first day of the week saw a large influx of patients in outpatient departments, with senior doctors taking over from their subordinates to handle the situation.

“This protest is to demand justice for a doctor who was brutalised while attending to patients for 36 hours straight. It is the 11th day since her body was discovered, but where is the justice? We will continue this protest until we get justice for our sister,” said a doctor protesting at RG Kar MCH.

The postgraduate doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar MCH on August 9.
