Big revelation in California: Mercedes-Maybach recently unveiled its new model, the 2026 SL 680 Monogram Series, at an exclusive event in Carmel, California. This high-profile launch is part of Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s revised strategy, following the disappointing results of its first-generation electric vehicles.

Luxury convertible design: The 2026 SL 680 Monogram Series is a two-seat convertible based on the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 platform. As the smallest contemporary Maybach, it reflects the brand’s luxury history and continues a legacy that includes iconic models such as the Maybach Zeppelin and SW38 Roadster of the 1930s.

Aimed at younger buyers: Mercedes-Maybach is aiming to appeal to a younger demographic with the SL 680. According to Daniel Lescow, head of Mercedes-Maybach, the bold design elements speak to the preferences of the brand’s younger global clientele, which averages 41 years old compared to 54 for Cadillac buyers.

Brand evolution: Since its relaunch in 2002 with models such as the Maybach 52 and Maybach 62, Mercedes-Maybach has regularly introduced new models. The brand underwent another makeover in 2014 and has since launched the 5.5-metre-long S680 sedan and the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV in 2023.

Performance and comfort: The SL 680 is powered by a 577-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine, the same as the AMG SL 63. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds and has a top speed of 161 mph. An upgraded suspension, improved exhaust system and additional sound insulation contribute to a smoother ride compared to the sportier AMG SL.
