New York: Eric Adamsthe mayor of New York Citywrongly referred to India and the Indian community as ‘Pakistan’ in comments he made during the Indian Independence Day celebration in QueensAdams was addressing members of the Indian-American community at the Queens 9th India Day Parade on Saturday.

The stage was decorated with Indian flags and saffron, white and green balloons. The banner that was used to decorate the stage from where the mayor addressed the members of the Indian community read, “Mayor Adams celebrates the Indian community,” PTI reported.

According to PTI, Adams was holding the Indian tricolour and the US flag and was surrounded by members of the Indian diaspora, who were waving the Indian flag, wearing tricolour sashes and sporting tricolour-themed attire.

During his remarks, Adams spoke about the diasporic community and mistakenly confused India with Pakistan three times.

“We raised the flag earlier this week in Bowling Green… And I think there is no greater symbol of what we offer to this community than the men and women who are part of the law enforcement community, who are here, the Pakistani officers, who continue to grow in number and rank as they continue to demonstrate that public safety is the prerequisite for our prosperity,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

“…So I appreciate you allowing me to come here. I’ve known this community for a long time, from Little Pakistan to Queens, Little Pakistan to Brooklyn. You guys are a fundamental pillar of our entire city. So let’s continue to celebrate your independence,” she added.

After this, someone from the crowd was heard correcting him and shouting “India”, “It’s India”.

The mayor attended a flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green Park in lower Manhattan in New York City on August 15 to mark India’s Independence Day. The day before, he had addressed a flag-raising ceremony at the same venue that was held to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day.
