Almost a week after the verdict was announced on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat pleads guilty to disqualification from the 2024 Paris Olympics as dismissed, The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) A full report on the entire process was published on August 19.
In the report, the CAS explained the terms and conditions of United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In its preliminary observations, the CAS also mentioned that this was a particularly difficult case. However, it noted that Phogat was over the 50kg limit for his wrestling category when he weighed in for the final at the Paris Olympics.
“This is a particularly difficult case. The facts are not in dispute: the applicant weighed more than 50 kg in her wrestling category when she weighed in for the final of the Paris Olympic Games. Had she competed, she would have won the gold or silver medal. Her success in the competition had brought her to that position,” the CAS document states.
“The sole arbitrator notes that the athlete entered the court and fought and won three rounds and reached the final of the 50kg wrestling competition at the Paris Olympic Games before failing the second weigh-in and being ineligible to compete in the final. There is no indication that she committed any irregularity,” the CAS document added.
What is the case of Vinesh Phogat?
On August 7th, Indian wrestler Vinesh PhogatCompeting in the women’s 50kg freestyle category at the Paris Olympics, she was disqualified just before her gold medal match with American Sarah Hildebrandt.
It was explained to her that her weight was 100 grams above the limit permitted by the UWW.
On August 8, she announced her retirement from wrestling after feeling upset by her disqualification.
Under mounting pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC), its president, Thomas Bach, said he hoped the verdict would be known before the conclusion of the Olympic Games on 11 August.
However, the verdict was delayed. On 14 August, the CAS announced its verdict rejecting Phogat’s petition and stating that he would not be awarded any medal in accordance with the rules.
Will Phogat go back on his decision to retire?

When He was asked if he would reconsider his decision.He told the media, as PTI “This incident is a deep wound and it will take some time to heal. However, the love I have received from my countrymen and people will help me heal. I will think about whether I want to continue fighting, but for now I cannot say what I will do. The courage I have received from the people will guide me in the right direction.”
