In an extraordinary show of solidarity, the leaders of the largest U.S. labor union endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, highlighting the support their groups have enjoyed during the Biden-Harris administration.
Labor leaders from across the country took the stage at the Democratic National Convention here in Chicago on Monday to share a unified message: “Working people have Vice President Harris back because she had them back.”
Harris, 59, is expected to formally accept the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination on Thursday to face her Republican rival. Donald Trump78 years old, in the elections of November 5.
“We’re all standing with Kamala Harris because Kamala Harris has always stood with us… She shares our vision for a modern labor movement, one that meets the needs of workers in the 21st century and an economy that is fit for the future,” said April Verrett, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
“For decades, we fought for greater investment in our infrastructure. While Trump made empty promises, the Biden-Harris administration delivered… Thanks to them, our members can buy a home, send their children to school, and retire with dignity. As president, Kamala Harris will continue to fight for the workers who are building America,” said Brent Booker, President of the Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA).
While Trump gutted workers’ rights and encouraged companies to move jobs overseas while cutting taxes for himself and his wealthy friends, Arris stands with workers and is fighting to strengthen the middle class, union leaders said.
“Kamala Harris has been there for us. She’s bringing American manufacturing back to forgotten places across our country. She cast the deciding vote to save our pension plan,” said Kenneth Cooper, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
“An economy of opportunity… where there is no such thing as a man’s job or a woman’s job or, as Donald Trump I would say it is a “black job.” A good union job. That is the future of our president. Joe Biden “It’s a future we’ve fought for and that’s the future Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will continue to fight for,” said Liz Shuler, president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).
As vice president, Harris helped pass the largest broadband investment in history, said Claude Cummings, president of the Communications Workers of America.
“Get into Joe Biden and Kamala Harris: “In a matter of weeks, they passed the American Rescue Plan, which pulled the economy back from the brink and allowed us to get back to work. They were guided by one basic principle: more freedom for workers, including the freedom to join a union. That’s why, this November, we’re moving forward with Kamala Harris as our president,” said Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
