the snowan eB2B platform, announced on Tuesday a partnership with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and public distributionand the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to transform Fair price shops (FPS) in ‘Jan Poshan Centers (JPK)’.

This initiative of the Ministry of Consumption, Food and Public Distribution aims to improve the income of Fair Price Shops (FPS) traders and, at the same time, improve the nutritional outcomes of the beneficiaries. The initiative also aims to provide training, access to credit and ongoing financial support to FPS traders, enabling them to offer high nutritional value products outside the Public Distribution System (PDS) in their stores.

The initiative was launched in New Delhi today in the presence of Pralhad Joshi, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy. Also present at the event were Manoj Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director, SIDBI, and Vaibhav Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO, udaan.

Vaibhav Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of udaan, said in a statement, “At udaan, our mission has always been to empower small businesses and create a more inclusive and efficient marketplace. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution’s Jan Poshan Kendra development initiative, in partnership with SIDBI and udaan, is an important step towards achieving that vision. By modernizing Jan Poshan Kendra and expanding its access to a wide range of products, the initiative aims to empower these essential community-based businesses while also contributing to the larger goal of ensuring that all Indians have access to affordable, quality nutrition. We are proud to be a part of this transformative initiative that will uplift both the small shops and the communities they serve.”

As part of this initiative, udaan will enable Jan Poshan Kendras to access a wider and more diverse range of food products through its eB2B platform. This will address requirements such as availability of a wide variety of products, regular supply of frequently demanded products and the need to cater to a large and diverse population. This initiative will provide Jan Poshan Kendras with a wide variety and adequate quantity of nutritional options at regular intervals to cater to the communities in the areas they are present in.

Under the pilot initiative, nearly 60 selected Fair Price Shops (15 FPS from each pilot district/state) have been identified across four states – Rajasthan (Jaipur), Uttar Pradesh (Ghaziabad), Telangana (Hyderabad) and Gujarat (Ahmedabad). Following successful validation of the model, the initiative aims to scale up and cover nearly 1.3 lakh Jan Poshan Kendras identified by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution for modernisation. To give impetus to this initiative through financial assistance, SIDBI will provide credit facilities to these Jan Poshan Kendra, enabling them to purchase foodgrains and FMCG products through the udaan platform. As part of the pilot project being undertaken across various states, udaan will provide access to over 3500 products from various categories of staple foods and FMCG, ensuring that the Jan Poshan Kendras are able to meet the diverse nutritional needs of their communities.
