The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela successfully conducted its orientation programme for first-year undergraduate students, marking the beginning of the academic journey of the new batch. The orientation was conducted in two phases. The event was held on August 17 for B-Arch students, integrated M-Sc students and students from select B-Tech programmes. The second phase on August 19 included students from dual degree programmes and from the remaining B-Tech departments. The orientation, attended by students and their parents, was aimed at familiarising the new students with the various functions of the institute, academic rules, campus environment, departments, faculty members, infrastructure and other supporting facilities. The session was chaired by Professor K Umamaheshwar Rao, Director, NIT Rourkela. The programme began with an overview of NIT Rourkela presented by AK Behera (Assistant Registrar, Academic-PG and Research). Prof. Samit Eri (Associate Dean, Academic-UG and UG Professor in-charge of Admissions) delivered the inaugural address, in which he informed that over 22% of the new admissions are girl students. He said that this year we have received a total of 1,032 students in our first-year undergraduate programmes, 468 students in M.Tech programmes and 188 students in Masters programmes, which includes a total of 74 international students. He further informed that as per the preferences of the students, branches like Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Electronics Engineering are among the preferred specialisations. Moreover, out of 20,000 JEE to-do members, over 250 students have chosen NIT Rourkela, reflecting the popular perception of the institute.

Director highlighted the importance of punctuality, discipline and responsibility

Director Prof. Rao introduced the students to the Dean, Associate Dean, heads of various departments and officials of the institute. Stressing the importance of punctuality, discipline and responsibility, he said that it is important for you to set your goals from now on, focusing on what you want to achieve by the time you graduate. Our actions should be geared towards national development and progress. NIT Rourkela offers a lot of opportunities for learning and growth, and I would advise you to maintain a disciplined approach, which will have a significant impact on your future. Registrar Prof. Dhiman briefed the students about the latest developments and facilities at the institute. Dean Academics Prof. S Chakraborty explained to the students in detail about the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 at the institute and said that NIT Rourkela is proud of its diverse and multidisciplinary departments.

The institute’s zero-tolerance policy against ragpickers was also highlighted.

The session saw introductory talks by Deans, Associate Deans, Heads of Departments and Professors-in-Charge (PICs) of various academic and administrative sections. Prof. Subrata Kumar Panda, PIC (Examination) outlined the rules and regulations of the examination. Prof. RC Pradhan, Associate Dean (Academic-PG & Research) spoke about attendance and academic schemes. Dean of Student Welfare Prof. Niranjan Panda introduced the students to various student clubs, which are divided into technical, sports, film and music, literary and cultural committees, and also highlighted the institute’s zero tolerance policy against tampering. Prof. SK Sahu (Chief Warden) provided guidance on the hostel rules and regulations.
