Uddhav Thackeray invokes Shakti Bill amid Badlapur protest over sexual assault: ‘… but our govt was toppled’

Mumbai News: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thhackeray on Tuesday invoked the Shakti Act, as protests rocked Badlapur railway station in Thane district. Hundreds of protesters blocked trains at Badlapur railway station, protesting the sexual assault of two boys by a male attendant at their school. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Thackeray said the Badlapur school incident should not happen “anywhere in the country”.

Uddhav Thackeray He further said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government was on the verge of passing the ‘Shakti Bill’, however, its government was ‘ousted’ by rebel and current Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Thackeray further added, “It is the responsibility of those people who overthrew our government and are now in power to pass the Shakti Bill and take the strictest action.”

What is Shakti Bill?

In 2023, the Maharashtra Assembly unanimously approved the Maharashtra Shakti Penal Laws Amendment Actmaking Maharashtra the second Indian state, after Andhra Pradesh, to back the imposition of the death penalty for particularly serious cases of rape and gang rape.

The bill introduced changes to laws on rape, gang rape, acid attacks and sexual harassment in the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Badlapur News: Kindergarten children sexually assaulted

Last week, at a school in Badlapur, two girls attending kindergarten were sexually assaulted by the school warden. The girls were locked up in their parents’ home, who later filed a complaint.

Maharashtra Police have arrested the male attendant. Maharashtra Police Chief Minister Eknath Shinde He had ordered the police to file charges of attempted rape against him. Three others were suspended, including the headmaster of the Badlapur school.

Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday claimed that the Badlapur school where the crime took place belongs to the BJP.

“I have come to know that the school where this incident took place belongs to BJP people but I do not want to get political in this matter so whoever is the culprit, be it a BJP worker or anyone else, strict action should be taken against him,” Thackeray said.

Angry parents of the school children and local citizens, including many women, gathered outside the school on Tuesday morning and also staged a “rail roko” protest at the Badlapur Train station, blocking the passage of commuter trains from approximately 8.30am.

They demanded action against the school and severe punishment for the accused involved in the incident. Some of the protesters, including women, later broke the school gate and vandalised it by breaking window panes, benches and doors, Maharashtra Police said.
