Just days after the cricket world was left shocked by the revelation of the former England star Graham ThorpeThe death of a former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa He opened up about his struggles with mental health and revealed that he suffered from “clinical depression.”
Uthappa revealed that he suffered from the disease in 2011 and gave details of his harrowing experience. The two-time Indian Premier League champion called the journey “tiring and tiring”.
“I recently came to know about Graham Thorpe and we have heard of several cricketers who have ended their lives due to depression. Even in the past, we have heard of athletes and cricketers who have ended their lives due to clinical depression. I have personally been through it too. I know for a fact that it is not a pretty journey. It is debilitating, exhausting and heavy. It is a burden,” Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
Uthappa revealed that he felt like a burden to the people around him and expressed a sense of hopelessness. The right-handed batsman said he felt ashamed of the person he became in 2011.
“You feel like you’re worthless. You feel like you’re a burden to the people you love. You feel absolutely hopeless. Every step feels heavier and heavier. With every step you take, you feel like more weight is being added to you. And you just feel immobile. I spent weeks, months, years not wanting to get out of bed,” she said.
“I remember in 2011, I felt so ashamed of who I had become as a human being that I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror. I spent the entire year of 2011 without looking in the mirror. I avoided any opportunity or even an instance of looking at myself anywhere. And I know how defeated I felt in those moments. I know how burdensome my existence had become. I know how far away I was from having a purpose in life,” Uthappa added.
Uthappa was part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team that won the 2007 T20 World CupIn total, he played a total of 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is for the national team after making his debut in 2006. He won the Indian Premier League (IPL) title with Chennai Super Kings and Knights of Calcutta while also playing for several other teams including Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors India and Rajasthan Royals.
