Raghuram Rajan: US presidential election too close to call for a winner

Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan has weighed in on the upcoming US presidential elections, stressing on the unpredictable nature of the electoral landscape. Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18, Rajan expressed his views on the close race between incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

“I think the polls are probably still at 50-50, maybe 52 for Kamala and 48 for Trump. So it’s still very close. And who knows what will happen between now and the election. A lot has happened already, including the assassination attempt that boosted former President Trump’s numbers quite a bit for a while. So I think we should be cautious about the possibilities,” Rajan said.

His comments come at a time when the global economy is facing numerous challenges, including inflationary pressures, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions. These factors could significantly influence voter sentiment and election outcomes.

The past few weeks in American politics have been tumultuous, to say the least.

President Joe Biden announced his decision to drop out of the presidential race and endorse Harris as his successor. This change comes amid heightened concerns about Biden’s abilities among Democrats amid an already tense political landscape following the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, which has heightened attention on the upcoming election.

Biden’s endorsement of Harris is aimed at unifying the Democratic Party and maintaining momentum in the face of a resurgent Trump.
