Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat is likely to contest the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections. According to an IANS report, a source close to her family confirmed the fact as some political parties are trying to convince her, even though the three-time Olympian recently denied being actively involved in politics.
“Yes, why not? In the Haryana assembly we are likely to see Vinesh Phogat against Babita Phogat and Bajrang Punia against Yogeshwar Dutt. Some political parties are trying to woo her,” sources close to the Phogat family told IANS.
Vinesh, who recently returned home after a sensational yet heartbreaking campaign at the Paris Olympics where she was disqualified for not meeting the weight requirement of 50kg at the second weigh-in on the day of her gold medal bout, was welcomed like a champion. Vinesh, who was accompanied by fellow wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, broke down as she could not contain her emotions.
Vinesh arrived early on Saturday morning and there were loud cheers from fans, friends and family as she emerged from Delhi airport. After winning three bouts in a row on August 6 and making it to the final, Vinesh missed the second weigh-in by just 100 grams. Vinesh was disqualified and placed last in the rankings under UWW rules. Vinesh appealed to CAS for a shared silver medal as she had already made the final, but her appeal was dismissed a week later.
Vinesh recently wrote an open letter about his disqualification and the process he has followed to lose all but 100 grams of his weight to meet the allowed weigh-in limit on Wednesday morning, August 7. Vinesh, who has 15 medals at senior championships, is yet to win an Olympic medal despite competing three times and recently in his letter he hinted that he might return to wrestling after announcing his retirement following the disqualification saga.
