Badlapur school girls sexual assault case: Internet suspended as NHRC seeks report; train services affected | India News

New Delhi: Amid protest at Badlapur railway station in Thane district, internet services were suspended in Badlapur amid protests over sexual assault of girls. It also led to major disruptions in railway services. The unrest led to diversion of 12 mail express trains and partial cancellation of 30 local trains.

“As of now, about 12 Mail Express trains have been diverted and the Badlapur local train has been diverted back to Kalyan and then towards Karjat via Diva and Panvel. About 30 local trains have been partially cancelled between Ambernath and Karjat Khopoli. The number is likely to increase exponentially with the onset of rush hour,” CPRO Central Railway said in a statement, ANI reported.

Meanwhile, “services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Ambernath and towards Kasara are running normally.”

In view of the situation, the Railways has requested state transport departments to provide 100 buses to accommodate the passengers.

“We have sought the help of various state-run transport authorities to provide us with around 100 buses to cater to the needs of passengers from Kalyan to Karjat. So far, around 55 buses have already been plied for the convenience of passengers,” the CPRO said in the statement.

Police used batons to disperse protesters gathered at Badlapur railway station.

Speaking to the media, Government Railway Police (GRP) Commissioner Ravindra Shisve said, “The track has been cleared and the report will be sent to the railway operations to ensure that operations can commence.”

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Maharashtra authorities for a detailed report on the sexual assault of girls at a kindergarten in Badlapur. The NHRC is also seeking an explanation for the “delay” in submitting a report. Notices have reportedly been sent to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in Maharashtra, demanding a full report on the incident within two weeks.

Earlier, police fired tear gas at angry residents who had started pelting stones at the school where the crime took place. The alleged sexual assault of two fourth grade girls in Badlapur, Maharashtra, has sparked widespread outrage.
