This year
finalists They’re a ragtag bunch of mischief-makers who’ve encountered everything from a stomach full of puzzle pieces to backyard fights with weasels. Here’s a look at their wild misadventures:
Archie, a pup from New Jersey, took his guard dog duties a little too seriously and broke a glass door to warn his family about the mailman. Fortunately, his injuries were minor and he only needed a few stitches.
Bear, a corgi puppy from Pennsylvania, got more than he bargained for when he chewed through a jar of nail glue. Luckily, the glue wasn’t harmful, but it certainly made for a sticky situation!
A growth spurt caused Clover, the parakeet who lives with her parents in New Jersey, to have oddly formed nails, causing her claws to catch on each other. Fortunately, a quick trip to the vet fixed the problem.
Irma, a Maltese dog from Florida, had mysterious stomach problems that turned out to be caused by pieces of metal wire, possibly from a barbecue brush. A new diet helped Irma recover.
Kodiak, a Gordon setter from Virginia, has a history of swallowing stones, and this year was no different. Luckily, the vet was able to remove one stone and the other passed naturally.
North Carolina dog Lambeau took a snack break and ate more than 250 puzzle pieces (without touching the edges or corners). The dog avoided surgery after an emergency visit to the vet.
A Shiloh shepherd from Massachusetts named Luca decided to become a master chef and dismantled a kitchen cabinet to reach the trash. Luckily, his owner discovered a potential intestinal obstruction before it became a problem.
Skye, a Great Dane from Oregon, took on a garden weasel and emerged victorious, though not without a minor bite wound. Fortunately, the pet made a full recovery.
All of these pets have recovered and received help from Nationwide pet insurance.
“Each year, the Hambone Award celebrates the recoveries of our nominated pets, which are made possible by the dedication of their owners and the expertise of their veterinary healthcare teams,” said Jules Benson, chief veterinary officer and vice president of pet health for Nationwide, in a statement.
