Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday announced a two-day closure of all schools due to continuous heavy rains for over 48 hours that left seven people dead, two missing and over 5,000 homeless in the state.

“Due to the current situation and heavy rains, the government has declared closure of all schools for two days on August 21 and 22. Also, all colleges will remain closed on August 21. All students, teachers and staff are requested to stay safe and follow the instructions,” Saha wrote on social media.

He further stated that officials from different districts have been working together to provide support to the flood-affected people and urged all social organisations to come forward to help in this crisis.

“All officials of district administrations of various districts, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and local authorities are on high alert and have been working together to provide relief and support to people in flood-affected areas.

“We also urge all social organisations, NGOs and dear citizens to remain vigilant and extend their full support during this crisis. Every iota of contribution can make a significant difference in the response and relief efforts,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tripura University also suspended all regular classes on August 21 due to heavy rains.

“All regular classes of Tripura University in all departments/centres shall remain suspended from 21st August 2024 in view of the prevailing situation and heavy rainfall,” reads a notification signed by the university’s registrar, Professor Chinmoy Roy.

According to the latest reports, 183 relief camps have been set up, providing shelter to 5,607 families. Of these, 24 are in the Western District, 30 in the Southern District of Tripura and 39 in the Khowai District.

Landslides were reported in many areas, many roads including national highways were blocked after trees fell due to heavy rains.

“The water level in Tripura has risen, leading to flooding in most areas due to rains that have been ongoing for over 48 hours. South Tripura and Gomati districts have been severely affected by the floods,” Revenue Department Secretary Brijesh Pandey said on Tuesday.

Bagafa and Belonia in south Tripura districts recorded 375.8 mm and 324.4 mm rainfall, Amarpur in Gomati district recorded 307.14 mm and parts of Khowai district in the last 24 hours, it added.

In early May this year, more than 2,500 people were left homeless and 550 houses were damaged due to Cyclone Remal.

In early July, two children, including a 10-year-old and a 5-year-old, were injured in a landslide in Gomati district.

In 2021, a man and two children were injured in landslides at separate locations in South Tripura district.

In 2019, more than 1,700 people were left homeless and nearly 822 houses were damaged by the rains.
