Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUMS) has made a major change in the rules for admission to MBBS and BDS courses under NRI quota in Punjab. BFUMS has also allowed immediate family members of NRIs to be considered for admission under the quota for admission to MBBS and BDS courses. This decision has been taken following an order issued by the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER). Around 185 NRI seats for MBBS and 196 BDS seats are admitted under NRI quota in all medical and dental colleges of Punjab. However, every year due to non-availability of eligible candidates, many seats under this quota remain vacant.
During the ongoing counselling for admission to postgraduate dental course, all 12 MDS seats under NRI quota remain vacant even after two rounds of counselling.
The fees for an MBBS seat in private and government medical colleges are around Rs 92 lakh and for a BDS seat is around Rs.
It costs Rs 36 lakh. In Punjab, 15 per cent of the total seats in private and government medical colleges are reserved for NRI quota candidates.
DMER Secretary Priyank Bharti issued an order on partial changes in the rules and regulations of NRI quota seats. As per the amended provisions, the DMER has prescribed an order for admission under the NRI quota seats.
The order read: “Genuine NRIs or their children originally belonging to the State of Punjab and genuine NRIs or their children originally belonging to any Indian State or Union Territory other than Punjab are not eligible to apply for NRI quota seats. If NRI seats remain vacant after considering the above preferences, wards or immediate family members of NRI candidates will be considered for admission under NRI quota.”
The relationship preference with NRI will be as follows:
-1) The father’s real brothers and sisters, that is, the real uncle and aunt.
2) The mother’s real brothers and sisters, that is, the maternal uncle and aunt.
3)- The father and the father’s mother, that is, the grandfather and the grandmother.
4) Father and mother of the mother, that is, maternal grandfather and grandmother.
(5) First degree cousins on the father’s or mother’s side.
The order also said, “Any seat remaining vacant in the NRI category after the second round of counselling shall be given to a foreign national eligible for NEET pass. However, if the seats remain vacant, they shall be converted into general category seats. Fees of NRI candidates shall be accepted only from the bank account of NRI or NRE.”
As per the existing provisions, NRIs or children of NRIs who originally belong to Punjab and Indian states other than Punjab can apply for admission to MBBS and BDS courses under the NRI quota. As per the rules, the person sponsoring the student should be a first-degree relative of the student and should generally be living abroad as an NRI. The university has also released a checklist for candidates seeking admission to undergraduate courses under the NRI quota.
