Responding to growing concerns over security at medical colleges and hospitals in the wake of the shocking RG Kar rape and murder case, the West Bengal Police has initiated a major initiative to strengthen security measures at state-run hospitals.

As a proactive measure, the state police have initiated the process of recruiting retired police officers as well as former officers of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force to oversee and strengthen security systems at these critical healthcare institutions, it said. The Indian Express.

On Tuesday (August 20), the West Bengal Police issued a directive to all Commissioners and Superintendents of Police, directing them to prepare lists of retired officers of the last two years who are “physically fit” and willing to take up duties in their respective areas. These lists must be submitted to the state police headquarters by August 24.

The move comes soon after the Supreme Court ordered the deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CISF forces were swiftly mobilised and deployed on Wednesday, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The state police letter clarified that these retired officials would be tasked with “supervising security arrangements at key government hospitals, including medical hospitals and colleges, district hospitals and super-specialty hospitals.” The remuneration of these posts will be handled by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, in accordance with the existing guidelines laid down by the Finance Department.

The directive is also extended to retired military personnel, and specifically targets those who held ranks like Naib Subedar, Subedar, Captain, Major or their equivalents. Such persons, who are registered with the Sainik Kalyan District Board and meet the fitness criteria, are also encouraged to apply.
